How much fabric do I need to sew a classic Dirndl?

Most of the sewing patterns bring an indicative table with the amount of fabrics to buy according to the size you want. Clerks in fabric stores are usually quite professional and can give advice concerning the quantities.

To calculate how much fabric to buy, the width of the fabric and the size of the Dirndl must be considered.

A guide to estimate the fabric required for Dirndls up to size 44 is shown in the following table:

The method I use to calculate the required fabric to make a Dirndl for girls, from size 92 to 152, is the following:

Most commonly used fabrics for Dirndls

Traditional Dirndls are made of cotton, linen or wool. The combination of different types of fabrics is possible, for example, the body in linen and the skirt in cotton.

To give it a more festive look, silk, velvet and brocades are also common.
