I would like to sew a Dirndl, how do I start?

First, we must decide, which model we want to make, if we want a 2 or 3-piece Dirndl, with other without sleeves, with buttons, zippers or special clasps for Dirndl, with or without piping, etc.

Then we need a pattern that fits what we want, you can make your own pattern or if you prefer you can use one of those available in the internet.

Once you have decided for the model and the pattern, we must acquire the necessary materials, which basically are:

  • Fabrics for the bodice, skirt, apron and lining.

  • Interlining (Vlieseline)

  • Sewing thread of the colour of the chosen fabrics

  • Buttons or zipper depending on the style.

  • Ribbon or trim for the neckline (this is optional, you can also make the typical “Rüsche” with the same fabric as the Dirndl if you want to decorate the neckline or you may simply do without this element).

  • Basic sewing material such as sewing machine, scissors, measuring tape, sewing paper, chalk to mark fabric, pins, etc.

Where to get patterns to make a Dirndl?

The magazine “Dirndl Revue”, according to my experience, is quite accurate in terms of sizes, shows different models, many of them traditional and easy to sew.

In Dawanda‘s web you can find patterns from small dealers which are suitable, vintage lovers may also find some used printed patterns.

Burda has a small selection of patterns for Dirndl, personally I have not used them, but Burda fans can have a look at Burda’s website.

Here are some links with Dirndl patterns which I find interesting, I have them in my list of things to do, however, at the day of this post I have not done this yet:
